F5 BIG-IP – Upgrading v10 to v11

Within this article we will provide you with the steps to upgrade an F5 LTM v10 box to v11.

New Device Upgrade

Below are the steps if you are going to be upgrading your v10 configuration onto a new device. These steps presume that you already have v11 running on your new device.

1. Verify your v10 configuration is valid by running the command b verify load
2. Save the configuration of v10 as a UCS file using the command bigpipe config save 10.x.UCS
3. On your v11 device install the UCS via tmsh load sys ucs 10.x.UCS no-license no-platform-check.
   Note : This runs the bigpipe daol as part of the upgrade. This makes a best effort of reading and converting the configuration.
4. If this fails then fix issue within the relevant configuration files (/config/bigpipe/bigip*.conf).
5. To re-attempt the conversion run the command /usr/libexec/bigpipe daol.
6. Then run tmsh save sys config partitions all and tmsh load sys config partitions all.

On-the Box Upgrade

Below are the steps if you are going to be upgrading v10 to v11 on the same device.

1. Below are the steps if you are going to be upgrading your v10 configuration onto a new device.
2. Verify your v10 configuration is valid by running the command b verify load
3. Disable the configuration roll forward option via bigpipe db LiveInstall.SaveConfig disable
4. Upgrade to v11.
5. Once the upgrade is complete install the UCS via tmsh load sys ucs 10.x.UCS.
   Note : This runs the bigpipe daol as part of the upgrade. This makes a best effort of reading and converting the configuration.
6. If this fails then fix issue within the relevant configuration files (/config/bigpipe/bigip*.conf).
7. To re-attempt the conversion run the command /usr/libexec/bigpipe daol.
8. Then run tmsh save sys config partitions all and tmsh load sys config partitions all.
